MediSave 2023 update: MediSave grants can be used for palliative care from July 2023, home care from October 2023
From 1 October 2023, Singaporeans receiving medical assistance at home will be able to use their MediSave account to pay for medical and nursing services at home, according to an update by The Straits Times.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) allows the medical service providers financed and supported by the MOH to submit applications for their clients who have returned home, enabling them to use the national medical savings plan MediSave. This subsidy increase is part of a larger effort to encourage older Singaporeans to live at home rather than in an assisted living facility, making it better for their emotional and medical well-being.
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, And Quaternary Care
From July 1, 2023, MediSave subsidies will also be extended to video consultations for home palliative care services. It supports telehealth providers and is a useful tool for community care providers.
MediSave is Singapore’s national medical savings scheme, which helps Singapore citizens and permanent residents set aside a portion of their monthly income to cover medical expenses for themselves or their immediate family. This includes the cost of hospitalization, outpatient or day surgery, and even the health care needs of the elderly.
Unlike other financial assistance schemes in Singapore, which require applicants to apply for assistance, MediSave works a little differently. As long as you are already a CPF member, you will automatically transfer part of your salary to your MediSave Account (MA) every month. It works in the same way as your CPF contributions, where a percentage of your salary is immediately deducted every month and deposited into your CPF accounts.
The payout limits under this scheme are carefully set to protect each individual’s savings and ensure that they still have enough money in their account for basic healthcare in old age. In general, withdrawal limits are sufficient to cover the costs of outpatient treatment and subsidized inpatient wards.

Acute care services include everything from inpatient hospital care to approved day surgeries. It is usually short-term care that involves multiple health care functions such as trauma care, emergency medicine, prehospital emergency care, acute care surgery, and critical care.
Rehabilitation services focus on helping people regain their physical, mental, or cognitive abilities as a result of injury, illness, or treatment. This allows them to easily work again and return to their daily lives.
